Chris Park sits just off Haviland Lake in the southwestern corner of the San Juan National Forest, about 18 miles north of Durango on Highway 550. The campground occupies a mostly flat, open area dotted with scattered ponderosa pines, so shade is intermittent and the sites feel roomy and exposed to sky. There are a total of 3 group campsites: two of those are listed for both RVs and tents and one is tent-only. Sites 1 and 2 each accommodate up to 75 people; Site 3 holds up to 150 and includes a covered picnic shelter with electricity and grills, plus a nearby volleyball court. All group sites have picnic tables and metal campfire rings, and the campground provides vault toilets and drinking water note that the only electrical provision mentioned is at the Site 3 shelter, not individual hookups. The campground is a short drive from Haviland Lake, an 80-acre no-wake reservoir that supports boating, canoeing and fishing and has accessible fishing docks along the shore. Several trailheads are within easy reach Forebay, Goulding, Elbert Creek and Purgatory Flats and the historic Rico-to-Rockwood Wagon Road from the late 1800s runs through the area if you want a dose of local history while you hike. The broader San Juan National Forest around Chris Park offers a wide range of recreation including biking, horseback riding and horse camping, off-highway vehicle use, wildlife viewing, picnicking and winter sports; plan activities accordingly and check trail and road conditions. Group site reservations and refunds are handled through Recreation.gov: canceling a group overnight facility less than 14 days before arrival incurs a $10 service fee and forfeiture of the first night's use fee; no-shows are assessed a $20 service fee and forfeit the first night's rate, taxes and add-ons; refund requests must be submitted within seven days of the reservation end date, with credit-card refunds returned to the original card and cash/check refunds issued by Treasury check (which can take 6 8 weeks). For access, navigation and seasonal openings check Recreation.gov or the forest office before you go.
