Fir Top Campground sits on the western shore of Jackson Meadow Reservoir in Tahoe National Forest, occupying a forested stretch of pine and fir with clear views toward the Sierra Crest and English Mountain. The campground is part of the Woodcamp Recreation Area and is operated and maintained by Tahoe National Forest; for facility-specific information including current fees, reservation rules and seasonal availability call (530) 994-3401. Access is off Highway 89 north of Truckee: follow Highway 89 toward Sierraville to the Jackson Meadows turnoff, then travel west on Forest Road 07 for about 18 miles to the reservoir, cross the dam and continue roughly four miles along the paved/gravel road to the campground. Small and low-key, Fir Top contains 12 single-family sites that accommodate both tents and RVs; each site has a picnic table and a campfire ring, and the campground provides flush toilets and drinking water. The reservoir and surrounding terrain define the recreational draw: Jackson Meadow Reservoir has a boat ramp and a designated swim beach within the recreation area, and the water is used for boating, canoeing, water skiing, swimming and trout fishing (rainbow and brown trout are commonly targeted). A half-mile interpretive nature trail wanders through adjacent Woodcamp Campground, and a stretch of the Pacific Crest Trail runs along the lake's east side, giving direct access to longer hikes. Hunting and mountain biking are common in the surrounding forest, and the broader Tahoe National Forest supports a wide range of activities auto touring, horseback riding and horse camping, off-highway vehicle use, picnicking and wildlife viewing among them so Fir Top is a good base camp for campers who plan to mix water-based recreation with trail and backcountry pursuits. Because the campground has only a dozen sites, plan ahead and contact the Forest Service for the most up-to-date information before you go.
