Verbatim from guest reviews on Recreation.gov ↗ (24 reviews, ★ 4.0). Not written or edited by us.

“Some of us had spotty internet connection, but the camp host was wonderful. The spot is bigger than I thought it would be and the eating facilities are fantastic.”

“My only complain was the restrooms . They were filthy. Not clean at all. ”

About

Sage Hill sits on a flat bench in the Santa Ynez Mountains within Los Padres National Forest, set close enough to the Santa Ynez River to make fishing and river-side walks an easy part of a visit. Oak trees shade some sites, and the landscape opens toward ridgelines that are part of the Transverse Range; expect the ground to dry out noticeably by mid-summer. Anglers casting from the river commonly find carp, catfish and bluegill, and the occasional bass that moves up from Cachuma Lake about seven miles downstream. The Aliso Canyon Trail begins behind the campground and leads toward Upper Oso Campground and the start of the Santa Cruz Trail, and nearby Cachuma Lake Recreation Area provides boating, kayaking and additional fishing opportunities. For horse folks, one group site is outfitted specifically for equestrian use with 12 corrals and a hitching post, and the campground's extra-large parking areas are designed to accommodate horse trailers. Practical details matter here: the campground contains a total of five sites four that accept both RVs and tents and one designated equestrian site so it's oriented toward groups rather than a large number of individual parties. Each campsite is set up to hold up to 50 people, while the equestrian site can accommodate up to 60. Facilities include flush toilets, drinking water and paved roads to the camp entrance; the nearest RV dump station is located at Cachuma Lake. Sage Hill is accessed from U.S. 101 via Highway 154 (roughly a 15-mile drive from the 101/154 junction) and a short drive on Los Prietos Road past the ranger station to the campground entrance. The listing here does not include up-to-date fee, reservation or seasonal-opening information, so contact the Los Padres National Forest office or the local ranger station before you go to confirm fees, reservation rules and current access conditions.
