“We love coming back to this group camp site every other year. It is shady, beautiful, peaceful, and just the right size for the group. The only downside are the pit toilets (flies and the smell) that our teens always complain about.”

El Prado Group Campground sits at about 5,600 feet in the Laguna Mountains, where stands of pines and oaks shade roomy group sites and the air is noticeably cooler than the coast an hour to the west. This is a small, historic mountain facility: there are five group sites in total, four of which are tent-only and one that accepts both RVs and tents (maximum RV length 40 ft). The campground contains the El Prado Cabin, built in 1911 as the first ranger cabin in Cleveland National Forest, and its quiet setting puts you a short walk or drive from the Laguna Meadow trail network and a segment of the Pacific Crest Trail. The broader Laguna Mountain Recreation Area is a draw for horseback riders, mountain bikers and hikers Noble Canyon and the Laguna Meadow trails offer day-trip options, and interpretive programs and a visitor center are a few miles away for families wanting natural-history talks and exhibits. Facilities are straightforward and group-oriented: sites accommodate roughly 30 to 50 people each, one accessible group site (Yerba Santa) provides space for four tents, and the campground provides drinking water, both flush and vault toilets, plus a large parking area. Part of the area is fenced to protect habitat for the endangered Laguna Skipper butterfly, so visitors must respect fence boundaries and posted occupancy limits. The site is typically open from summer through early fall; stop at the entrance station on arrival for site location and up-to-date information on fees and reservations, or consult the Cleveland National Forest website before you go. To reach El Prado, drive east from San Diego on I-8 and take the Sunrise Highway (State Route S1) north toward Mount Laguna for about 15 miles to the Laguna/El Prado area just past the 26-mile marker.
