“great spot! loved making the trek over the dirt roads. can’t wait to go back!”
“Camp ground was in great shape. As it’s about end of season the pit restrooms were quite ripe. Over all I have missed this area. ”

Longest RV site listed: 20 ft.
Boulder Basin Campground sits at roughly 7,300 feet in a mixed-conifer stand, where tall pines and firs keep most sites shaded through the day and the dirt roads through the trees remain unpaved. The campground offers 16 single-family campsites in total seven are set up to accommodate both small RVs or vans and tents, while nine are tent-only each furnished with a picnic table and a campfire ring with grill; vault toilets are provided but other infrastructure is limited, reflecting the site's primitive character. Access is via Black Mountain Road (Forest Route 4S01), a narrow, rough, unpaved forest road that the Forest Service has identified as high-priority for maintenance; as of the most recent notice the road was in poor condition and four-wheel drive is recommended, and the route is not advised for low-clearance vehicles or trailers. From Idyllwild plan on heading north on State Route 243 and then turning onto Black Mountain Road for the final few miles; Idyllwild (about a 10 20 minute drive from the start of the forest road) is the nearest place for fuel, groceries, and restaurants. The campground is a practical jumping-off point for outings rather than a service-heavy basecamp. Several trailheads are nearby, including the Black Mountain Trail a moderately strenuous 3.6-mile route used by hikers, mountain bikers and horseback riders which climbs forested slopes, offers views toward Banning Pass and Mount San Gorgonio, and connects into the Pacific Crest Trail for longer treks. Boulder climbing, mountain biking and horseback riding are commonly pursued in the immediate area; more broadly within the San Bernardino National Forest you'll also find opportunities for fishing, wildlife viewing and winter sports depending on season. Note that the Forest is considering fee changes across multiple sites and is seeking public input; check the San Bernardino National Forest page on fs.usda.gov for current fees, reservation policies and the latest road condition or maintenance updates before you go.
