Blue Lake Campground sits in a remote pocket of the South Warner Mountains on Modoc National Forest land east of Likely, California, accessed via Forest Service Road 64 (the Jess Valley Road) roughly a 17-mile drive into the range. The lake itself was created by a massive ancient landslide and is notable for its deep blue color and very cold water fed by several mountain streams; the campground occupies a lower bench of the mountains with surrounding ridges dotted with ponderosa and Jeffrey pines, incense cedar and aspen. The loop road through the campground is one-way; at the upper end of that loop, just past the fee station and next to the camp host, you'll find the single group site the campground's only campsite configured for RV use. Although nearby hillsides show signs of recovery after a 2003 wildfire, the campground area retained many large pines that provide good shade in summer. Recreation is straightforward and site-specific: a 3-mile trail circles Blue Lake, there are paved campground roads and a boat dock area for launching small craft, and fishing from shore or boat is a common draw. Several trailheads into the South Warner Wilderness lie within roughly 6 15 miles if you want longer hikes or solitude, and OHV riders use the neighboring forest road systems. Water at the campground is usually available from late May through early October, but the supply can be slow to come on early in the season call the Modoc National Forest office to confirm availability and potability before you arrive. The forest as a whole supports a wide range of outdoor pursuits (biking, boating, camping, fishing, hiking, horseback riding, hunting, winter sports and wildlife viewing among them), so plan for a self-reliant visit and check the Forest Service for current fees, reservation rules, and any seasonal access advisories.
