Badger Flats Group Camp sits above Rancheria Creek at just over 8,000 feet on an open, gently graded meadow shaded by firs. The campground is a single reservable group site one campsite that accepts both RVs and tents and is large enough for up to 100 people and 35 vehicles, so it's used for larger family gatherings or organized outings rather than individual sites. Within the group area you'll find grills, fire rings, bear-proof food lockers and picnic tables; vault toilets are provided, but there is no drinking water on site, so plan to bring your own supply. Horses are allowed in the group camp, though there are no corrals or other equestrian amenities provided. The site is reached from the east side of Huntington Lake by following Kaiser Pass Road about five miles up from the lake edge; for up-to-date facility information or reservations call (559) 893-2308. Reservations are managed through Recreation.gov, and once a reservation's start date has begun it cannot be modified by the contact center or campground manager. The area is a good base for hiking and horseback travel: there is trailhead access into the Kaiser Wilderness and a connector to the California Riding and Hiking Trail, and the sandy banks of Rancheria Creek offer shallow wading when flows are low. About five miles downhill from the campground, Huntington Lake expands recreational options hiking, equestrian trails, biking, canoeing and sailing, plus trout and kokanee salmon fishing are all available there. Sierra National Forest also offers hiking and opportunities to stay in or visit historic fire lookouts and cabins. Practical considerations worth noting before you go: bring plenty of potable water, warm layers for high-elevation evenings, secure food in the provided bear lockers, and check road and seasonal access conditions on Kaiser Pass Road before traveling.
