Maumelle Campground sits along the McClellan-Kerr Arkansas River Navigation System on the northwest side of Little Rock, where the broad navigation pools of the Arkansas River create long, flat water vistas and a steady flow of boating traffic past a public dock and ramp. The campground contains 143 sites in total: most are configured for both RVs and tents (134), while there is 1 RV-only site and 8 tent-only sites. Sites are arranged across multiple loops Loop A has 20 sites, B 37, C 10, D 12, E 28 and F 18 amounting to 125 looped sites within the campground layout and leaving the remainder in other designated areas. Park facilities include a boat ramp and dock for launching, hot showers, a playground for kids, and eight large group picnic shelters; the park information also notes that 128 campsites are equipped with electric hookups, making it a practical base for mixed groups of campers and small RVs. Winter brings a dramatic shift in wildlife: large numbers of eagles, many migrating from Canada and the Great Lakes region, concentrate along this stretch of the Arkansas River, so wildlife viewing and photography are particularly rewarding in the colder months. Recreation here is straightforward and river-focused: anglers can chase crappie, bream, hybrid bass and white bass from shore or boat, and the site supports boating, water sports, biking, picnicking, playground use and general camping; the Nuttall Trail also passes through the park for short hikes and connections to the wider Arkansas River Trail. Pinnacle Mountain State Park is only about two miles away, offering 13 hiking trails and dedicated mountain-biking routes, while nearby Two Rivers Park links into an extensive riverside trail network good options for day trips off the campground. Practicalities matter: all reservations are handled through the recreation reservation system and the park enforces standard late-cancellation rules cancelling the day before or on the day of arrival triggers a $10 service fee and forfeiture of the first night's use fee (a single-night reservation will forfeit the entire amount paid), and once a reservation date has begun it cannot be changed online or through the call center. Note also that any sites in the UAMS Medical Loop require prior approval from a park ranger and a physician before reservations can be made.
