Whether you’re looking for lush coastal evergreens, spicey-sweet pine forests, or deciduous woods that burst with color in the fall, you’ll find the perfect destination on this list.  All of these forests offer quiet and tranquility, excellent wildlife viewing, and the special coziness that comes from being in the woods.  From coast to coast, here are some of our nation’s best:

DEEP WOODS

California Redwoods
These towering, ancient trees grow naturally in circles, creating magical groves throughout their woods.  Head to the California redwoods and get to know this unique coastal ecosystem, from the Chinook salmon in the streams to the Roosevelt elk that graze in the meadows. While you’re here, watch for gray whales on the coast, black bears in the forests, and endangered marbled murrelets on the beach.

The Rainforests of the Olympic National Park, Washington
The lush forests in the Quinault, Queets, Hoh, and Bogachiel valleys are some of the most spectacular examples of primeval temperate rain forest in the lower 48 states. These rain forests once stretched from southern Oregon to southeast Alaska, but little remains outside of protected areas.  You’ll find Sitka spruce and lacey hemlocks, plus pine and Western red cedar trees, many of which are hundreds of years old.

Bowman Hill Wildflower Preserve, Pennsylvania
For a superb display of native plants, head to the Bowman's Hill Wildflower Preserve, to hike through 134 acres of gardens, meadows, and woods. You can view the 1000 species of native plants, see the pond and Pidcock Creek, and admire the birds and wildlife that love this wildflower setting. 

Crested Butte Wildflower Festival, Crested Butte, Colorado
In mid July, Crested Butte puts on a wildflower festival that’s unlike any other.  You can hike, ride horses, or take a jeep tour through lush alpine meadows, surrounded by thousands of wild blossoms.  Don’t miss the chance to see stunning bunches of Colorado’s famed wild columbines!

Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, Texas
This exceptional center has sixteen 16 unique gardens devoted to wildflowers and butterflies.  You can wander through the theme gardens with their 23 demonstration beds, see the Ann and O.J. Weber Butterfly Garden, and stroll through the South Meadow with its rainbow of blooms.

California Wine Country
Whether you visit Napa or Sonoma, you’ll find a countryside that’s filled with romance as you wander from vineyard to vineyard, sampling vintages.  You’ll find acres of vines, languid rolling hills, and plenty of California sunshine in this idyllic part of the country.  Don’t miss the chance to take a hot air balloon ride over the fields, enjoy a bike ride through the countryside, or take a chauffeured winery tour.

Charleston, South Carolina
The genteel pace of this historic town invites you to slow down and smell the wisteria.  This romantic city is a perfect place to explore on foot, admiring the classic architecture, or by horse and buggy as you take a carriage ride over cobblestone streets.  If you bring your wheels, you can tour the area’s plantation halls, including Boone Hall Plantation, a house that had a starring role in Gone With the Wind.

Connecticut
From candlelit seaside dinners to drives through woods that are bursting with fall color, Connecticut is an all-season destination.  You can take sleigh rides in the winter, head out on a wine tour in spring, or visit in the summer for weekend jazz concerts in New Haven and other coastal towns.  Be sure to visit colorful villages like colonial Litchfield and the seaport town of Mystic.

If you love exploring painted sandstone bluffs and hiking with the sun overhead, then desert camping is for you.  These delicate ecosystems are more alive than they seem -- with a little patience, you'll discover plenty of wildlife, beauty, desert flowers, and breathtaking sunsets.

Moab, Utah
By making Moab your home base, you'll have access to Canyonlands and Arches National Parks, some of the most stunning places in the parks system.  Moab offers mountain scenery, fabulous fishing rivers, and terrific biking and hiking trails.  This town is known as the "slickrock capital" because of its incredible mountain biking areas.

Anza-Borrego Desert, California
This area offers superb hiking and biking trails, wilderness areas, and wildlife like golden eagles, deer, marmots, big horn sheep, and coyotes. You'll find colorful badlands, pinion-juniper forests, palm groves, and wildflower washes.

Page, Arizona
Set near the bright blue waters of Lake Powell and the massive Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, the Page region offers outstanding outdoor activities.  You can explore 'color country,' go boating and kayaking on the lake, and see Rainbow Bridge, the world’s largest natural bridge.
