Top Patriotic Destinations for the Fourth of July

The Fourth of July is a holiday when Americans can celebrate the history of the United States. One great way to do this is to visit some of the most patriotic and historic destinations throughout the country. Here are a few destinations that have played important roles in American history, some of these destinations would be included in most lists for best patriotic destinations, and others are perhaps a bit less well known.
Alabama Civil Rights Museum Trail
Throughout Alabama travelers will find important sites from the Civil Rights Movement. Important destinations include the National Voting Rights Museum, the Civil Rights Memorial Center in Montgomery, and the Selma-to-Montgomery National Historic Trail. All of these sites and many more played an important role in shaping the country we live in.

Boston, MA
Boston, Massachusetts is another historic city that families should be sure to visit. This beautiful east coast city has an unending supply of attractions. Visitors can walk the Freedom Trail, which is a fantastic way to see many of the sights Boston has to offer, including the Paul Revere House, the USS Constitutions and more.

Fredericksburg, VA
This town is filled with significant Civil War battlefields. Visitors can go to Chatham, which is the only house in America that was visited by both George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. Chatham is widely known for the role it played during the Civil War, when it was both a headquarters for the Union Army and a hospital. Visitors to Fredericksburg can visit four battlefields at the Fredericksburg/Sportsylvania National Military Park, which includes Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and The Wilderness and Sportsylvania Court House.

Gettysburg, PA
Visitors should make Gettysburg National Military Park a first top on any trip to Gettysburg. This national park provides visitors with a look back in time to the Battle of Gettysburg and the Civil War. Gettysburg  also offers visitors all sorts of activities, from Battlefield Tours to exploring haunted houses and beyond.

Independence National Historic Park, Philadelphia, PA
Located in Old City Philadelphia, this 45 acre park, is the best area to enjoy the history of the United States. You can find the Liberty Bell as well as Independence Hall. Within this World Heritage Site you will be able to learn about the creation of both the Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution right in the same place. Franklin Court, also in the Historic Park is the site were Benjamin Franklin's home once stood. Visitors to Independence National Historic Park can enjoy all of this history and 18 other historic structures.

Lincoln Memorial, Washington, DC
Visitors Washington, DC and the National Mall should be sure to see the Lincoln Memorial in particular, one of the great monuments in the nation. The Lincoln Memorial gives visitors a glimpse into the importance of the great president. The Memorial is open 24 hours a day, and it is a great evening destination, with the lights and more.

The Appalachian National Scenic Trail
The Appalachian Trail is one adventure that every visitor to the east should try to experience. The Trail stretches from Mount Katahdin in Maine to Spring Mountain in Georgia, following the crests of the Appalachian Mountains.

US Capitol, Washington, DC
One of the best ways to watch American Democracy, as well as seeing living history, is to visit the Capitol. Visitors should remember to reserve tickets for a tour of the Capitol well in advance. It is also possible to get a pass to watch the House and Senate in session. The Capitol Visitor Center, where all visitors start their trip to the capitol, is a great destination by itself, with many exhibits about the history the Capitol and more.

Vicksburg National Military Park, MS
Vicksburg National Military Park commemorates the action at Vicksburg during the Civil War. When Vicksburg surrendered on July 4, 1863 and Port Hudson, Louisiana was captured just days later, the Union gained control of the Mississippi River, which was an important turning point in the war. Today, visitors can learn all about the history of Vicksburg at the National Military Park and on the tour road. Within Vicksburg National Military Park there are monuments, the USS Cairo Museum and Gunboat, and much more.
