The Best Horse Racing Destinations

Horse racing is a sport that has been popular for hundreds of years throughout the world. Here in the United States we celebrate major races with fun festivals and museums and world class facilities. Winners of these races, from horse to owner are honored for their achievements. Here are a few destinations that offer excellent horse racing and festivities.
Belmont Park
This track in Elmont, New York holds two racing seasons through the year, the first from late april through July is the summer season, and the second in September and October is the Championship Meet. In addition, Belmont Park hosts the third of the Triple Crown races, the Belmont Stakes, taking place on June 11, 2011.

Churchill Downs
Located in Louisville, Kentucky, Churchill Downs is a destination filled with opportunities to watch exciting events. Each year Churchill Downs hosts the Kentucky Derby, the first of the Triple Crown races. This track also hosts the Kentucky Oaks each year, and has often hosted the Breeder's Cup.

Hialeah Park Race Track
This exciting track in Hialeah, Florida holds stakes throughout the winter. Their season ends with the Hialeah Invitational Championship. Hialeah Park Race Track also is home to a flock of flamingos, which are a fun icon for the track and some of these birds have been donated to zoos and to the Hollywood Park race track.

Hollywood Park
Hollywood Park in Inglewood, California may be know for the names of those original owners, but this track also offers visitors excellent racing opportunities. Races are held in the winter and early spring.

Pimlico Race Course
Races are held from April through July at this Baltimore, Maryland race course. Pimlico also has the Preakness Stakes each year, one of the three reaches that make up the Triple Crown. This year the Preakness will be held on May 2, 2011. Attendees at Pimlico for the Preakness Stakes can enjoy watching the winner draped with a blanket of Maryland's state flower, the Black-eyed Susan.

Santa Anita Park
This race track in Arcadia, California holds stakes races from December through April. The Santa Anita Derby is this tracks biggest race of the year. The Santa Anita Handicap is also an excellent race to watch live at the track.

Saratoga Race Track
Saratoga Race Track is located in Saratoga Springs, New York. This track has events from late July through Labor Day. In addition to holding races throughout the summer, Saratoga Race Track will also host the 142nd Running of the Travers Stakes.
